Oikos

di Guy Dvir

"People feel overwhelmed. And the bigger our country gets, and the more complex, and the more information we have available to us, the more overwhelming it gets.
And when people feel overwhelmed, the response is - I don't matter.
The same time our consciousness is filled with information ? the individual feels smaller and smaller and less and less powerful".
Chris Jordan, Environmental photographer Green gadget conference 2008.

We are surrounded by information in such a broad way, that sometimes it's hard and time consuming to find information on how to act in a more ecological way.
That's why I felt the need to design an object that combines all the information a family needs, in order to turn their home into a more sustainable environment.
Oikos is a management system that connects to a personal computer, studies a family's habits, audits and measures the energy consumption, and suggests solutions in various fields of sustainable living.
Oikos in Greek means - "household", and is also the source for the word eco.
The topics covered by the system are:

  • - Home energy consumption and data.
  • - Waste and recycling - how, what and where to recycle.
  • - Consumerism - how to purchase in a more eco way, and a store and product locator for green products.
  • - Transportation - how to reduce transportation impact.
  • - Learn and play - educational games for kids.
  • - Share - a contact system with other families that have Oikos system.
The object itself is made out of recyclable plastic and steel, uses OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) and is mercury and lead free. With the guide of this system the individual family can make an environmental difference, through a sustainable home management.
