The Aesthetics of Domestic Sound

The Aesthetics of Domestic Sound

Lisa Lefebvre explored a particular aspect of technology for her thesis project: noise pollution. She states, "We’re surrounded by objects that create noise as a by-product of their function... it is the designer’s responsibility to manage the sound that comes with the product". As a result, she created hand-felted domestic appliances. The felt has a two-pronged effect on the appliances, dampening the noise and silencing them visually as well. The new pieces are a critique on the disturbing nature of technology while also providing a way to create a stronger emotional connection to our appliances.
